Is Anoka haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Anoka is the town the railroad sold — the Boyd County village the Pioneer Town Site Company laid out in 1903 on Ponca Creek, named for the Dakota word for 'on both sides,' where thirty-one businesses were running by 1905: the White House Saloon that Keeffe built with lumber he hauled himself, the two grain elevators, the Herald, the hotel, the bank.

The railroad made it and the railroad left it — the post office closed in 1966, the population that was a hundred forty-five in 1910 was ten in 1990, and the streets and the elevator and the store building are what's left. Anoka is the Nebraska ghost town that was built for the train and emptied when the train stopped mattering.

The file keeps Anoka: the 1903 townsite, the thirty-one businesses, the elevator still standing, and the village that the railroad outlived.

Anoka is the archive's Boyd County file — the railroad town, the Dakota name, and the streets that remain.

Why this file matters

Anoka is the archive's Boyd County file — the 1903 townsite, the boom to thirty-one businesses, and the near-empty grid.

A railroad town keeps its elevator — the file's suggestion being that Anoka's hold is the company town that wasn't: the streets laid out for a hundred years and emptied in sixty, and the grain elevator still marking where the town was.

Documented history

  • Founded by the Pioneer Town Site Company in 1903 on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad; few town buildings survive. The town's documented rise and abandonment is the record the rest of the file stands on. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. Sources including 'Finding Nebraska’s Ghost Towns' carry the record. The record keeps it — history, not lore.
