The record — long form
Aquia Landing sits where Aquia Creek meets the Potomac in Stafford County — in the nineteenth century a steamboat landing and the northern terminus of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad, where passengers transferred between rail and river on the run between Richmond and Washington. For the enslaved along the Potomac, a landing like this was infrastructure in both directions: steamboats carried the traffic of slavery, and some of them carried fugitives north.
Water routes
The Network to Freedom documents the landing's place in the escape geography of the Potomac corridor — the river routes that carried freedom seekers toward open water and free soil. During the Civil War the landing changed hands as a prize: Union gunboats shelled it in one of the war's earliest naval actions, the army made it a supply base, and the facilities were burned when Union forces pulled back in 1862.
Today the landing is a county park — beach, fishing pier, interpretive markers on the shore. The file keeps it for the departures the record can only partly count: the people who left from this bank as cargo and the ones who left as fugitives.
