The record — long form
On Christmas Eve 1850, seven members of the Thompson family — two parents and five daughters — came in out of the cold at Asa and Caroline Wing's one-story farmhouse on what is now State Route 69 in Mexico, New York. They stayed four days. Wing's diary, kept at his bedside as illness closed in, records the work: finding a captain he could trust to take the family across Lake Ontario to Canada. Local tradition holds that the boat went down before the Thompsons reached the far shore.
The silver tongue
Wing had trained for the Baptist ministry and been put out of it — his church expelled him for taking communion across denominational lines, which in that decade meant standing too close to the wrong ideas about human equality. What remained was the oratory: he lectured for abolition across central New York and as far as Connecticut, organized for the Liberty Party, and raised bail money after William Chaplin's capture in a Washington rescue case. Frederick Douglass, who knew him, praised Wing's style in a eulogy read at the dedication of his monument after he died at thirty-eight.
The house, bought in 1847, hid fugitives for days at a time; when the rooms were full they went to the cellar, the floor doors concealed under a rug. The diary that documents it survives at the Mexico museum — a thin written record for a man whose business required leaving none.
