The record — long form
BB-55 earned its ghosts the way warships do. USS North Carolina — lead ship of the Navy's first class of fast battleships — was commissioned April 9, 1941, fought through the Pacific from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, took a torpedo in September 1942 that killed five men, and finished the war with fifteen battle stars. Decommissioned in 1947, she was saved from the scrapyard by a statewide citizens' campaign and opened as a memorial on the Cape Fear River opposite downtown Wilmington in 1962.
What the night watches report
Visit North Carolina's haunted-places file lists apparitions and hatches reported moving on their own. The deeper file comes from two decades of sanctioned overnight investigations: television's Ghost Hunters profiled the ship in 2005, and groups have returned ever since, reporting loud bangs from the sick-bay bedsprings, shadow figures, disembodied voices, and a recurring figure described as a man with flaming red hair. The torpedo room — where the 1942 blast killed crewmen and which the public tour does not enter — produces the most charged accounts; one reporter on a Ghost Guild investigation described an unexplained wave of grief there.
The ship's staff take a measured line: the activity is reported, investigated, and unexplained, not endorsed. The archive keeps the pairing intact — one of the most decorated American battleships still afloat, and a second, unofficial crew that refuses, in the telling, to muster out.
