The record — long form
The slave-trading complex at 1315 Duke Street in Alexandria ran under several names and one function. Franklin and Armfield built the business there in the late 1820s — among the largest dealers in the domestic trade, shipping people south by the hundreds. In 1858 the establishment passed to Price, Birch and Company, which advertised openly — cash paid for men, women and children — and was operating the pen when the war arrived.
1861
Union troops took Alexandria in May 1861 and seized the pen. The photographs made that year — the barred yard, the cells, the dealers' quarters repurposed to hold Confederate prisoners — circulated as evidence of what the trade's machinery actually looked like, abolitionist argument made without a caption.
The yard had run the same pattern under each owner — purchase in the upper South, shipment or coffle toward New Orleans — and the cells the Union photographed had already done decades of service under earlier names.
The building survives — one of the only physical slave-trading establishments left standing in the country — and now operates as the Freedom House Museum, owned by the city that once taxed its business. The Network to Freedom listing files the pen under Birch's name; the museum files it under the names of the people it held.
