Is Bucky Harris Park (formerly Jackson Public Square) haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

In the mid-1800s the ground under what is now Bucky Harris Park was Jacksonburg Square — courthouse, three commercial blocks, and the offices of four newspapers: the Jacksonburg Sentinel, the American Freeman, the Michigan Freeman and the American Citizen. The Freeman is counted as Michigan's first anti-slavery paper, and the DeLand family that co-owned the Sentinel printed the movement's arguments while, per the local record, moonlighting in the work itself.

Printer's ink and moving feet

Jackson in the decades before the war was both hub and haven on the route toward Canada — a town where abolitionist editors argued in print and quiet households fed, clothed and measured freedom seekers for new shoes, while men sympathetic to slavery worked openly in the other direction. The record places fugitive-turned-editor Henry Bibb speaking in the square in 1850, and names the newspapermen — the DeLands among them — as conductors who paid for it in persecution, broken property and hard money.

The commercial blocks are gone; the corner of Michigan Avenue and Jackson Street is now a pocket park with a mural and a stage. Resident researcher Linda Hass assembled the paper trail that put the square on the Network to Freedom in 2020, and the state marker that fall gave it back its old job description: a place where the local press literally set the terms of resistance.
