Is Burris City haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Burris City was platted in 1855 in Louisa County, on bottomland near the junction of the Iowa and Mississippi rivers — a location its founders plainly read as a future port town, at the mouth of a navigable river where the Iowa's valley met the great waterway. It failed inside thirteen years.

The causes on record are two and unglamorous. The floodplain that promised a landing delivered floods instead, and the railway that would have made the site a shipping point was never built. The Iowa River Water Trail's Louisa County guide preserves the summary verdict: the town foundered, and its last building was removed in 1868.

Paper towns on bottomland

Burris City belongs to the largest class of Iowa ghost towns — riverfront speculations that existed mostly as plats while their promoters waited on a railroad that went elsewhere. Nothing in the record suggests a surviving footprint; the townsite returned to the river bottoms that had never stopped being floodplain.

The file's research note handles the modern ground truth: the water trail brochure supplies historical context along the river route, not a visitor destination — the townsite is not equated to a boat landing, and no parcel access follows from the platted past. The archive's record of Burris City is the arc itself: surveyed 1855, empty by 1868, gone.

Documented history

  • Platted in 1855 near the Iowa–Mississippi river junction, the town failed amid floodplain problems and a failed railway; its last building was removed in 1868. A ghost town's file is unusual: the emptiness itself is documented, and this entry is part of that record. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. The detail is preserved in 'Iowa River Water Trail, Louisa County guide'. The date is part of the site's documented spine.
