Is Calico Ghost Town haunted?
No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.
The record — long form
Calico is the ghost town Knott saved — the 1881 silver boomtown with 500 mines and 22 saloons that died when silver dropped to 63 cents, then was bought by Walter Knott in 1951 and restored from old photographs. His uncle John King had filed the original Silver King claim.
The town was the silver — the $86 million in silver and $45 million in borax that came out of the calico-colored mountains, the 3,000 people and the dog Dorsey who delivered the mail. The mines ran 1881 to 1907; the town emptied when the price collapsed.
The town is still there — the county park Knott donated in 1966, the five original buildings among the restorations, California's official Silver Rush Ghost Town. The file keeps the town: the 1881 strike, the boom and the bust, and the restoration that's half history and half Hollywood.
Calico is the archive's ghost town file — the silver boomtown, Knott's restoration, and the town that's the West's most visited ghost.
Why this file matters
Calico is the archive's ghost town file — the 1881 silver strike, the 500 mines, and the Knott restoration that saved it.
A ghost town that was restored keeps its mine — the file's suggestion being that Calico's hold is the Silver King: the claim Knott's uncle filed, the $86 million, and the town that came back as a park.
