The record — long form

Cave Hill is the garden cemetery Louisville built on a quarry farm — the 296 acres Edmund Lee laid out in 1848 on William Johnston's old land, the winding roads and hilltop lots and valley ponds of the rural-cemetery movement brought to the falls city. George Rogers Clark is here, reinterred from Locust Grove; Colonel Sanders is here, under the bronze bust his daughter designed; Muhammad Ali, the Union dead of the national cemetery, two hundred years of the city's makers.

The quarry that nearly became a railroad cut became the finest arboretum in the region — the Satterwhite Temple copied from Marie Antoinette's, the gatehouse clock tower, the five lakes Lee made of the farm's basins. The dead of the Civil War fill the national section; the city's greatest fill the rest — Louisville's memory made landscape.

The file keeps Cave Hill: the 1848 charter, Lee's garden design, Clark and Sanders and Ali, and the cemetery that became the city's arboretum.

Cave Hill is the archive's Louisville file — the garden cemetery and the city's whole memory in one landscape.

Why this file matters

Cave Hill is the archive's Louisville file — the 1848 garden cemetery and its famous dead.

A cemetery designed as a park keeps its hills — the file's suggestion being that Cave Hill's hold is the landscape: Lee's winding roads and ponds that made a graveyard the city's finest green space and its memory.
