Is Coal City haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Coal City is the town that was Dempsey City for a year — the 1885 Oak Springs Bench settlement that George Storrs turned into Great Western in 1921 when the coal went in, renamed for Jack Dempsey when the heavyweight champion moved in to train in 1923. When Dempsey decided not to invest in the coal, the town renamed itself Coal City in February 1924 — the citizens' verdict on the boxer who wouldn't buy in.

The Great Western mine never got the railroad it needed — the coal declined through the thirties and the town was empty by 1940, the stone Andreini-Colzani building and the schoolhouse foundations what's left of the camp that was almost named for a champion. The tents and the bakery and the stores all went; the ghost town on the bench keeps the name the boxer gave up.

The file keeps Coal City: Oak Springs Bench, the Great Western townsite, the Dempsey City year, and the 1940 abandonment.

Coal City is the archive's Dempsey file — the town that named itself for a champion and took it back.

Why this file matters

Coal City is the archive's Dempsey file — the 1921 coal town and the year it was Dempsey City.

A town that renamed itself in anger keeps the story — the file's suggestion being that Coal City's hold is the pride: the year it carried the champion's name, and the February 1924 vote that took it back when he wouldn't invest.
