The record — long form

On December 15, 1833, thirty-two men and women signed on as founders of the Congregational church in Jacksonville, Illinois — every one of them anti-slavery, in a Morgan County town divided enough on the question that neighbors soon pinned a name on them: 'the Abolition Church.' The record is plain that it was not meant as a compliment. The congregation wore it anyway.

When Underground Railroad work began moving through Jacksonville, the church supplied the staffing. Deacon Elihu Wolcott was known as the chief conductor; member households gave shelter, clothing, food and wagon space, steering freedom seekers north under the only compass that mattered — the North Star, toward Canada — while Illinois law and, after 1850, federal law priced the work in fines and prison. The Park Service lists the congregation on the Network to Freedom: the file's entry is a church that put its founding conviction in writing, then answered the knock at the door.
