The record — long form

Cooch's Bridge is Delaware's only battle — September 3, 1777, the skirmish where Maxwell's light infantry met the British advance on the way to Brandywine. It was the only Revolutionary battle fought on Delaware soil, and the claim is that the Stars and Stripes flew there first.

The fight was the delay — the new Corps of Light Infantry holding the British and Hessians at Christina Creek, the fighting retreat over Iron Hill, the ammunition running out. Eight days later the same armies met at Brandywine.

The site is still there — the Cooch homestead, the Dayett Mill, the unmarked graves of the two dozen Americans buried on the farm. The file keeps the battle: Delaware's only one, the first flag claim, and the graves that are still being found.

Cooch's Bridge is the archive's Delaware file — the state's only Revolutionary battle, the 1777 skirmish, and the graves on the farm.

Why this file matters

Cooch's Bridge is the archive's only file — Delaware's single Revolutionary battle, the flag claim, and the unmarked graves.

A state's only battle keeps its field — the file's suggestion being that Cooch's Bridge's hold is the claim: the only fight on Delaware soil, the possible first flag, and the two dozen graves that are still unmarked.

The record of claims

Documented legendApparition

DNREC recounts a headless-soldier legend. Old military ground in Newark, Delaware carries its dead the way it carries its walls — permanently. The story is documented as legend — recorded and retold, never verified as fact. The report is preserved in sources like 'Exploring the Haunted Fort Delaware and Beyond'. Whatever walks there, it walks often enough to keep the reports coming.

Documented legend

DNREC recounts a headless-soldier legend. The fort's documented violence is the soil the reports grow in — Newark, Delaware keeps both on file. The account has a collector's pedigree — written down as legend, which is the most honest status it can hold. Sources including 'Exploring the Haunted Fort Delaware and Beyond' keep the claim in circulation. The story outranks the documentation, which is how you know it's folklore.

Documented history

  • The bridge area was a Revolutionary War battlefield. Cooch's Bridge's service record is documented — the entry belongs to the verified layer beneath the garrison lore. The fact is historically verified — the part of the file that doesn't need hedging. The detail is preserved in 'Exploring the Haunted Fort Delaware and Beyond'. It's the sort of fact that gives the haunting reports their context.
