The record — long form
Cedarhurst is a farmhouse that grew into a president's retreat. The core is the Fanning farmstead of the 1860s — still the kitchen — inherited by Mary Frances Harriman Severance, expanded Italianate in the 1880s, and then transformed by Cass Gilbert between 1911 and 1917 into a hundred-foot-fronted country seat with pedimented porticoes, a ballroom wing with pipe organ and three fireplaces, a walled rose garden, and ten acres intact.
The owner was the law's inner circle — Cordenio Severance, Mantorville-born, president of the American Bar Association, co-founder of the American Law Institute, and Gilbert's longtime friend and client. Cedarhurst was where the republic's power came to visit: Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Harding, and Coolidge all passed through the ballroom under Gilbert's porticoes, four presidents at a lawyer's Minnesota farm.
The house survives nearly whole — National Register since 1976, the Gilbert rooms preserved, the rose garden walled as designed — run for years as a conference and event estate. It is the archive's quiet evidence that the Gilded Age's architecture of influence reached the Minnesota countryside: a farmhouse's bones inside a president-entertaining palace, all of it still standing.
The Cordenio Severance House is the archive's Cedarhurst file — the Mantorville farmhouse Cass Gilbert expanded into a country estate where four presidents visited, its ballroom and rose garden surviving nearly whole.
Why this file matters
Cedarhurst is the archive's Gilbert file — the farmhouse-to-estate evolution on record, the ABA president's retreat designed by the architect of the Supreme Court, with Roosevelt through Coolidge in the guest book.
A farmhouse that hosted presidents keeps its ballroom — the file's suggestion being that Cedarhurst's hold is the accumulation: the 1860s kitchen inside the Gilbert palace, the organ and the rose garden, and the century of Minnesota power that visited.

The Cordenio Severance House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its local significance in the themes of architecture and law.
