Is Crete Cemetery and Crete Congregational Church haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Before there was a building, there was an oath. The Bebee's Grove Congregational Society, formed among the settlers around Plum Creek in Crete Township, adopted a credo against slavery in the 1840s — 'believing American slavery to be oppressive and sinful,' the members resolved to do all they consistently could, 'as citizens and Christians,' toward 'its speedy and peaceful overthrow.' Local historians count it among the first two churches in Illinois to put that position in writing.

The indicted deacon

The congregation's members made good on the paperwork. Deacon Samuel Cushing was indicted by a Will County grand jury in July 1843 for harboring four freedom seekers out of Missouri — jailed, bonded out, and back conducting within the year, moving fugitives by night to the next station at Crown Point. The Bebee, Cook and Safford families worked the same line, and the village itself — platted in 1849 by Willard Wood — became what the local record calls a key stopping point.

The societies joined in 1852 and raised the proper church in Crete in 1853, founding families later memorialized in its stained glass. The cemetery beside it kept the conductors close; the building itself was sold for an antiques shop in 1963 and bought back by the historical society — a rescued building for a story about rescuing.
