The record — long form

Darby was settled in 1682 — Penn's year — by eight Quaker families, mostly out of Derbyshire, and the meeting they founded never really left the corner of Main Street. The school followed in 1692 and taught for two hundred and twenty-five years before the influenza pandemic finally laid it down in 1917. The meetinghouse now standing, a doubled fieldstone building with the men's and women's business sides divided equally by a sliding partition, dates to 1805.

The boy they got back

The listing rests most heavily on one documented life. Allen Rickets took his freedom at age eleven in the early 1830s, walking out of enslavement near Baltimore with family, and found harbor among the Darby Friends — who educated him at their school and, when kidnappers later seized him, organized and got him back. Darby sat squarely on the route between Wilmington and Philadelphia, and its members appear through the antislavery record as hosts, speakers and operatives; in 1772 the meeting heard antislavery testimony from John Woolman in the year he sailed for England and died at York.

The Park Service added the meetinghouse and school to the Network to Freedom in 2023, with seventy-one documented stationmasters, conductors and supporters traced to the meeting. The file's entry is two hundred forty years of minutes, and one boy the community refused to lose twice.
