The record — long form

On December 30, 1860, Martha Coffin Wright sat down in her Auburn home to write her daughter and reported the week's arrivals: 'seven newly arrived Slaves that Harriet Tubman has just pioneered safely from the Southern part of Maryland.' One woman had carried a baby the whole way, a little laudanum keeping it quiet in daylight; the group had walked by night and hidden by day in thickets, whistled back to Tubman when she returned from foraging. They spent that Christmas week at the Wrights' — the file's picture being a kitchen full of people sleeping near the stove.

The kitchen where the movements crossed

The house at 192 Genesee Street stood close to the courthouse where Martha's husband David practiced law, and it was a working station in Auburn's Quaker-anchored network — the same households as the Sewards and the Howlands. Martha was Lucretia Mott's sister, and in July 1848, with the Motts staying in that house and Martha visibly pregnant, the sisters met with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and fixed the call for Seneca Falls. Two of the nineteenth century's operations for human freedom ran through the same rooms.

The building is gone — the listing is a site and a marker, the letter the load-bearing evidence. Martha Wright died in Auburn in 1875; her last decade's friendship with Tubman kept the kitchen door working until the war made the railroad obsolete.
