The record — long form
The Elsinore is the castle Shakespeare's ghost built — George Guthrie's Tudor Gothic palace that opened May 28, 1926 on a livery stable's site, named for Hamlet's fortress and billed as the largest and most lavish theater between Portland and San Francisco. The nave-and-aisle foyer, the Povey Brothers stained glass, the Shakespeare murals — Salem's movie palace was a cathedral to vaudeville.
The talkies came in 1932, the Depression took the lease to Fox and Warners, and the palace sank to second-run movies and vandalism until the wrecking plan of 1980 — the Save the Elsinore Committee that formed to stop it, the $3.4 million Return to Grandeur, the blade sign the Columbus Day storm took in 1962 finally rebuilt for the centennial. The theater that nearly became a parking lot turned a hundred in 2026.
The file keeps the Elsinore: the Hamlet castle, the nave foyer, the near-demolition, and the restoration that brought the blade sign back.
The Elsinore is the archive's Salem file — the Shakespeare palace and the committee that saved it from the lot.

A theater named for a haunted castle keeps its stage — the file's suggestion being that the Elsinore's hold is the rescue: the palace that should have been a parking lot, brought back to grandeur by the town that wouldn't let it go.
