The record — long form
The Oregon State Hospital Museum is the asylum that became the movie — the 1883 Kirkbride building in Salem, built on moral-treatment principles when the state stopped contracting with Dr. Hawthorne's private asylum, the U-shaped main building that's now the National Register landmark. Three thousand patients at its peak in the fifties, down to six hundred when Dean Brooks let the film crew in.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was shot there in 1975 — Kesey's Oregon novel filmed in the real hospital's empty wards, eighty-nine patients hired as extras, Dr. Brooks playing the superintendent on screen. The museum in the preserved front section holds the film's history and the hospital's both — the institution that was the set for the greatest film about mental institutions, telling its own story where it happened.
The file keeps OSH: the 1883 Kirkbride, the Cuckoo's Nest filming, the museum in the old building, and the asylum that told its own story.
Oregon State Hospital is the archive's asylum file — the Kirkbride that became a movie set and a museum.

The hospital was established after the closure of the Oregon Hospital for the Insane in Portland, located 47 miles (76 km) north of Salem. The Oregon State Hospital was active in the fields of electroconvulsive therapy, lobotomies, eugenics, and hydrotherapy. In the mid-twentieth century, t
