Is Emlen Physick Estate haunted?
The record holds 3 claims, 1 legend, 1 named entity — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.
The record — long form
In 1879, Dr. Emlen Physick Jr. — twenty-one years old, scion of a Philadelphia medical dynasty descended from Philip Syng Physick, the father of American surgery — moved into an eighteen-room mansion on Washington Street in Cape May. Frank Furness designed it in full Stick Style: inverted corbelled chimneys, jerkin-head dormers, bracketed porch, the most aggressive domestic silhouette in a town already full of Victorians. It is the only Furness house open to the public.
The household the doctor installed was himself, his widowed mother Frances Ralston, and two maiden aunts — Emilie Parmentier, described in the record as happy-go-lucky, and Isabella, who had epilepsy, was confined to an upper floor in a wheelchair, and died in the 1880s in her early thirties. Dr. Physick never married, ran the local SPCA, and kept a run of dogs behind the carriage house — dogs Frances never permitted in the main house. The file notes this because the hauntings, reportedly, include the dogs.
The documented record
The house has had exactly one long-term family. After the Physicks it passed to Dr. Harry Sidney Newcomer around 1946; his first wife Marian died in the house in 1949, and when he remarried in 1955 the new Mrs. Newcomer refused to live there — she believed it was haunted, and the couple moved to an apartment downtown. The estate went to Cape May Inns in 1967, then to the brink of demolition, and in 1970 the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts — now Cape May MAC — formed to save it. The city owns it; MAC has run it as a museum ever since.
The file also preserves the house's screen credit: it stood in for the slasher film The Prowler in 1981, special-effects man Tom Savini's second picture, which for a haunted Victorian is nearly typecasting.
What witnesses file
Cape May's paranormal community — principally medium and author Craig McManus, who has written five books of the town's ghost stories — calls the estate "Cape May's original haunted house" and identifies the resident roster as the doctor, Frances, Emilie and Isabella, plus an unidentified presence in the carriage house. Tourists report dark apparitions moving down hallways, footsteps, and a child's voice in the common rooms.
The distinguishing feature of this file is that the operator files its own evidence. MAC's Voices from Beyond tour plays visitors actual EVP recordings and photographs captured in the house — dozens of them, the museum says — making the Physick Estate one of the few dossiers where the institution itself maintains the recorder. The Tennessee Wraith Chasers investigated it for Haunted Towns in 2017.
What remains
The estate is open year-round as a museum, its ghost tours running beside the history tours, the two kept in their separate drawers by staff who describe the ghosts as residents rather than attractions. The record's most quoted line belongs to the logic of the thing: a house is haunted only if the ghosts are home. At the Physick Estate, the family never really left — and by some accounts, neither did the dogs.

Emlen Physick EstateThe record of claims
Staff at the Physick Estate present EVP recordings interpreted as spirit voices and photographs they read as apparitions — the museum's own paranormal file, assembled on the premises. Whether evidence or interpretation, the recordings are now part of what Cape May's famous house museum shows its visitors.
Museum lore reports Dr. Emlen Physick himself, his formidable mother, and a beloved dog among the estate's spirits — the household, essentially intact, declining to vacate. A doctor who never left his practice is exactly the ghost a house museum would order. The file stays open on it. The reports keep the address on the map.
Tour guests at the Physick Estate report footsteps, voices, and the sensation of a dog brushing past — the last being the detail that sells the rest. Cape May's only Victorian house museum keeps its original family in every sense the lore allows. The claim holds its place in the ledger. The account stays in the file — reported, retold, unresolved.
Museum lore reports Dr. Physick, his mother and a beloved dog among the spirits. The house's rooms are where the accounts concentrate — old houses keep their stories in the walls they were built around. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. 'Emlen Physick Estate' carries the account. It's the version the place will be remembered by, whether or not it's the true one.
