Is Fallingwater haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Fallingwater is the house over the waterfall — Frank Lloyd Wright's 1935 masterpiece for the Kaufmanns, the cantilevered concrete trays over Bear Run that the AIA called the best all-time work of American architecture. The Kaufmanns lived there 26 years; the world has been visiting since 1964.

The house was the integration — Wright's 'live with the waterfall' instead of looking at it, the sandstone quarried on site, the hatch that opens to stairs down to the stream. The son's Taliesin apprenticeship brought the architect; the department-store fortune bought the building.

The house is still there — the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's museum, the 5 million visitors, the UNESCO World Heritage listing. The file keeps the house: the 1935 design, the cantilevers over the falls, and the building that's organic architecture's summit.

Fallingwater is the archive's Wright file — the house over the waterfall, the Kaufmann commission, and the building that's American architecture's best.

Why this file matters

Fallingwater is the archive's Wright file — the waterfall house, the organic summit, and the building that's the AIA's best.

A house over a waterfall keeps its cantilevers — the file's suggestion being that Fallingwater's hold is the integration: the trays over Bear Run, the hatch to the stream, and the building that's Wright's masterpiece.

Fallingwater is a house museum in Stewart Township in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, United States. Designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, it is built partly over a waterfall on the Bear Run stream. The three-story residence was developed as a weekend retreat for Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., the owner of Kaufmann's Department Store in Pittsburgh, and his wife Liliane. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC), which has operated Fallingwater as a tourist attraction since 1963, maintains 5,000 acres (2,000 ha) surrounding the house. Edgar Kaufmann Sr. had established a summer retreat at Bear Run for his employees by 1916. When employees stopped using the retreat, the Kau

Reported a presence in the house. The house's rooms are where the accounts concentrate — old houses keep their stories in the walls they were built around. The reports are anecdotal — consistent enough to record, thin enough to stay unproven. 'Fallingwater' carries the account. It is the sighting the place is known for, and it hasn't stopped.

Documented history

  • Built 1935-39; the Kaufmann commission is documented. Fallingwater's history is documented rather than told — this entry is part of that spine. The record holds it as fact — documented, not retold. The detail is preserved in 'Fallingwater'. The date is part of the site's documented spine. The account stays in the file — reported, retold, unresolved.
