Is Florida Theatre haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed documented legend. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

The Florida Theatre opened the day television was invented — April 8, 1927, the same day the World News Service carried the first wire transmission, and Jacksonville's biggest theater rose on the site of the police station. The Mediterranean Revival palace with the twin towers and the Moorish-courtyard interior — Michel Angelo Studios did Tampa's too — had the roof garden and the $100,000 Wurlitzer and the nursery for the children. It was Florida's largest theater; it's one of four movie palaces the boom left standing.

The Elvis night is the legend — August 10-11, 1956, when Judge Marion Gooding drew up the arrest warrants for the hip-swiveling and met the twenty-one-year-old privately to lay down the law. Presley performed anyway; the warrants never executed. The theater closed as a movie house in 1980, reopened as a performing arts center in 1983, and is now a top-five venue in its class — the palace the judge couldn't shut down and the wrecking ball couldn't take.

The file keeps the Florida Theatre: the 1927 opening, the Michel Angelo interior, the Elvis arrest warrants, and the movie palace that outlived the movies.

The Florida Theatre is the archive's Elvis file — the palace the judge threatened and the Wurlitzer that still plays.

Why this file matters

The Florida Theatre is the archive's Elvis file — the 1956 arrest warrants and the surviving palace.

A theater keeps its warrants — the file's suggestion being that the Florida's hold is the standoff: the judge who prepared to arrest Elvis and the theater where the hip-swiveling happened anyway, still one of the four palaces Florida kept.

The record of claims

Documented legendUnspecified Haunting

The theater’s indexed history page recounts a haunted reputation. The theatre's reports favor the booth, the balcony, and the stage — the building's own logic of where a ghost would linger. 'History' preserves the telling; the record keeps it filed where it belongs, as lore. It's the kind of claim that outlives debunkings — too many witnesses, too few explanations.

Documented legend

The theater’s indexed history page recounts a haunted reputation. The theatre's reports favor the booth, the balcony, and the stage — the building's own logic of where a ghost would linger. The account has a collector's pedigree — written down as legend, which is the most honest status it can hold. The account appears in 'History'. As folklore it's unkillable: the story is too good, and the place too fitting, to let go.
