The record — long form
After the Creek War of 1813-14, the United States threw up a line of log stockades along the Alabama frontier to watch the Muscogee towns and the Spanish in Florida. Fort Crawford was built on a bluff over Murder Creek near present East Brewton in Escambia County — a small frontier post in the years just before Alabama statehood in 1819. The fort vanished so completely that its exact footprint is now an open question: in 2009 archaeologists dug near East Brewton Baptist Church, where the fort was presumed to have stood, and found nothing. The Escambia County heritage book doesn't mention it.
Fort Crawford Cemetery, on Snowden Street near the presumed site, may date to the stockade era — but the file's research notes are explicit that a cemetery is not proof of a fort's ground.
The soldier and the girl
The reports collected by the Southern Spirit Guide are vivid for such a thin file. A Confederate soldier's shade is said to prowl the grounds — in a 2011 video by Paranormal Productions he reportedly approaches visitors asking, 'Where is my bayonet?' Another account has a shadow figure seizing a pedestrian passing through, and a young girl in a white dress has been reported among the stones. The Brewton Standard has covered the ghost claims alongside the archaeology.
The archive holds both layers at once and keeps them separate: a fort that may or may not have stood on this ground, a cemetery that certainly does, and apparitions filed as reported lore rather than events.
