The record — long form
The Frederic Remington Art Museum is the museum the widow built. Remington never lived in the house — the 1810 Parish Mansion in Ogdensburg, built by the St. Lawrence County land developer David Parish — but his widow Eva did, from 1915 to 1918, in rooms owned by Remington's friend George Hall. When Eva and her sister Emma founded the Remington Art Memorial in 1923, they put the world's largest Remington collection in the house she'd last occupied: his sculptures, paintings, studio contents, the easel and brushes, the hockey stick, the elk's-tooth cufflinks, even the cigars left in his pocket.
The collection almost went to Washington — Eva offered the Indian artifacts to the Smithsonian, then took them back when she learned the museum would split the firearms, saddles, and clothing into separate displays. She wanted the whole West kept together, and Ogdensburg kept it: the boyhood town where Remington had grown up, the North Country he kept returning to between the trips west that made him the painter of the vanishing frontier.
The museum keeps the artist the way Eva wanted — not just the bronzes and the nocturnes but the man: the narrow bed, the scrapbooks, the studio stand, in the mansion where the visitor asks 'Did Remington live here?' and gets the true answer: no — but this is where he is found.
The Remington Museum is the archive's widow file — the 1810 Parish Mansion Eva Remington made into the world's largest Remington collection in 1923, the trove she pulled back from the Smithsonian to keep the artist's West whole.
