Is Friend haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Friend, in the wheat country south of Dufur in Wasco County, was the end of the line — literally: the Great Southern Railroad's tracks stopped here, making the settlement a terminus for the grain country around it. The town took its name from George J. Friend, the early homesteader who ran the post office, though that was the second choice: the community wanted 'Woodbine,' and the postal authorities rejected it as too close to Woodburn.

The terminus had a full small-town inventory — depot, store, churches, and a one-room schoolhouse raised in 1909 that outlived its educational purpose to become the community center.

The tracks pulled up

When the Great Southern was abandoned in 1935, the reason for Friend's existence left with the rails; the tracks were removed, the depot economy ended, and the town thinned to a handful of buildings. What the tourism record keeps is the iconography: the old Friend Store as the settlement's signature shell, the cemetery holding the town's dead apart from the settlement footprint, and the schoolhouse still serving what community remains.

The research notes draw the file's honest edge: some buildings are still in use, and 'historic settlement' is the operative term — Friend is not wholly abandoned. What the archive records is a railroad terminus that outlasted its railroad: a town named by postal rejection, kept by a schoolroom, and remembered by a store.
