The record — long form
The building at 924 North Fillmore began as a church: St. Jude's Episcopal, raised in 1869 on the foundations of the congregation's earlier building, destroyed during the Confederate retreat from Shiloh. The parish pledged its land as collateral and lost it to the bank; in 1872 A. B. Dillworth — treasurer of Mississippi's Confederacy — bought the property for his daughter Fanny's marriage to Confederate Major George Washington Bynum, and the church became a house.
The documented record
Later owners included the Ramers — he a vice-president of the Saville Duvall Coffee Company, which merged into what became Maxwell House — and after his death Mrs. Ramer kept the place as a boarding house. In the 1960s it passed to W. O. Hathcock, of state-line-mob notoriety, and spent years as a bordello. A 1985 rescue by a local realtor, doctor, and judge turned it into a restaurant and inn, christened for the more than two hundred generals whose commands passed through Corinth when the railroad crossing made the town worth two battles and a siege.
What's reported
Guests on the second floor file the standard reports — voices, doors working themselves, lights going out — and the attribution is specific: a servant said to have died in a drunken fall down the stairs, still heard climbing them in the hours before dawn. The fall is legend-shaped; the house's century and a half of documented tenants is not. The archive keeps both columns.
