Is McRaven House haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed documented legend. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

McRaven House is Vicksburg's time capsule — the 1797 pioneer house built by highwayman Andrew Glass, added to in 1836 and 1849 without updating the old parts, so the house is three centuries in one building. National Geographic called it the 'Time Capsule of the South'; Mississippi calls it the most haunted.

The house was the layers — Glass's two-room hideout with the removable ladder, Sheriff Howard's 1836 Empire addition where his 15-year-old wife Mary Elizabeth died after childbirth, and John Bobb's 1849 Greek Revival front. Bobb ran it as a Confederate field hospital during the siege and was shot dead by Union soldiers 100 yards from his own door.

The house is still there — the Murray sisters who lived as if it were still the 1800s until 1960, the wedding shawl of Mary Elizabeth still in the house, the most-haunted label on A&E and the Travel Channel. The file keeps the layers: the 1797 highwayman's hideout, the 15-year-old bride, the murdered owner, and the sisters who never left.

McRaven is the archive's Vicksburg file — the time-capsule house, the three building periods, and the most-haunted label that's earned by the deaths.

Why this file matters

McRaven is the archive's Vicksburg file — the highwayman's house, the field hospital, the murdered owner, and the time capsule that never updated.

A house built in three centuries keeps all of them — the file's suggestion being that McRaven's hold is the layers: Glass's ladder, Mary Elizabeth's shawl, Bobb's murder, and the sisters who lived like it was still 1860.

McRaven got its current name from the street it is located on, which was formerly called McRaven Street, but is now Harrison Street. McRaven has been on the Mississippi Department of Archives and History's Historic Preservation list since January 8, 1978. It is also believed by many to be haunted and has been called "the most haunted house in Mississippi."

The record of claims

Documented legendHaunting

Visit Mississippi recounts alleged former-resident spirits. McRaven House in Vicksburg, Mississippi is the kind of old house where every sound eventually gets a name. It's a documented legend: the telling is real, the contents remain folklore. The haunting claim is now part of the site's identity, filed alongside the documented history.

Documented legend

Visit Mississippi recounts alleged former-resident spirits. The house's rooms are where the accounts concentrate — old houses keep their stories in the walls they were built around. The story is documented as legend — recorded and retold, never verified as fact. Sources including 'Ghostly Adventures: Mississippi’s Spookiest Haunts' keep the claim in circulation. As folklore it's unkillable: the story is too good, and the place too fitting, to let go.

Documented history

  • The tourism source dates initial construction to 1797. McRaven House's history is documented rather than told — this entry is part of that spine. The press recorded it; the detail stands as reported history. 'Ghostly Adventures: Mississippi’s Spookiest Haunts' documents the entry. The entry's timeline holds it; the lore holds the rest.
