The record — long form
The Clemens farm is the settlement's founder — the 1818 purchase that started Longtown, the free Black community on the state line. The prosperity was the exception — the brick I-house that was the showplace, the crops that outproduced the neighbors. The school was the gift — the Wesleyan church land, the cemetery that served the community.
The Underground Railroad was the role — the Siebert documentation, the 'leaders in the movement' that the Clemens were. The Union Literary Institute was the neighbor — the integrated school that the freedom seekers attended. The Clemens farm is the rare survival — the founders' house that's left, the Longtown that's mostly gone.
The file keeps the Clemens farm: the 1818 purchase, the Longtown settlement, the UGRR work, and the brick house.
The Clemens farm is the archive's Darke County file — the free Black settlement's founder.
Why this file matters
The Clemens farm is the archive's Darke County file — the Longtown founder's house.
A farm keeps its settlement — the file's suggestion being that the Clemens' hold is the community: the 1818 founding, the UGRR station, and the brick house that's the remnant.
