Is Jarbidge haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Jarbidge is the last gold rush in the lower forty-eight — Dave Bourne's 1909 strike in the canyon the Indians called Ja-ha-bich, 'the devil,' the camp that replaced Goldfield as Nevada's top gold producer in the early twenties. Sixty million dollars out of the ground in a district seventy miles from the county seat, the townsite dedicated by the government because the miners petitioned for it, the last 1849-style stampede in a state that had been making them for sixty years.

The wilderness came after — Nevada's first designated wilderness wrapping around the district, the Forest Service fights over the canyon road and the cemetery that went all the way to Congress. The town that produced more gold than any Nevada camp in 1919-21 is a handful of buildings on the Jarbidge River now, the most remote town in the contiguous states still holding its devil's name.

The file keeps Jarbidge: the 1909 Bourne strike, the last great rush, the wilderness fights, and the town at the end of the road.

Jarbidge is the archive's last-rush file — the devil's canyon and the final stampede.

Why this file matters

Jarbidge is the archive's last-rush file — the 1909 strike and the wilderness that surrounded it.

A rush that ended the era keeps its canyon — the file's suggestion being that Jarbidge's hold is the finality: the last old-style gold stampede in the lower forty-eight, in a canyon named for the devil, that the wilderness closed around when the gold ran out.

Documented history

  • Remote mining community retains inhabitants and historic jail cells. A ghost town's file is unusual: the emptiness itself is documented, and this entry is part of that record. The press recorded it; the detail stands as reported history. The detail is preserved in 'Nevada Ghost Towns'. The date is part of the site's documented spine.
