Is Kykuit haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Kykuit is the Rockefeller lookout — the 1913 Beaux-Arts villa on the Pocantico Hills height where four generations of the family lived, named for the Dutch word for the view over the Hudson it commands. Delano and Aldrich designed it; Bosworth rebuilt it into the classical villa it is; Ogden Codman did the interiors; the art collection is the family's — Calder and Warhol and Moore and the Picasso tapestries Nelson added.

The house is the dynasty's — John D. built it, Junior lived in it, Nelson governed New York and served as vice president from it. The gardens and the galleries hold a century of the family's collecting, and the estate is the National Trust's now — the private house that became a public site while staying the Rockefellers'.

The estate is the family's philanthropy in stone — the house, the gardens, the art, and the Pocantico Center that runs it, the place where the fortune that built Standard Oil became the foundation that preserved its own home. The file keeps the look-out's view: the Hudson below, the Palisades across, and the house that four generations of America's richest family called the retreat.

Kykuit is the archive's dynasty file — the 1913 Rockefeller villa, the four generations who lived there, and the art collection that made the private house a public museum.

Why this file matters

Kykuit is the archive's gilded file — the Rockefeller seat, the Beaux-Arts villa with the art collection, and the estate that went from private fortress to National Trust property.

A house that held a dynasty keeps its view — the file's suggestion being that Kykuit's hold is the Hudson: the look-out the name means, the collection the family hung, and the hill that watched the river while the Rockefellers ran the country.
