Is Kreischer Mansion haunted?
The record holds 2 claims, 1 legend, 1 named entity — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed documented legend. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.
The record — long form
Balthasar Kreischer made his fortune on fire — he arrived from Germany in 1836, a year after the Great Fire destroyed most of New York, and made fire brick for the rebuilding. He gave Henry Steinway seventy-five thousand dollars to start his piano company, built a factory town on Staten Island they called Kreischerville, and around 1885 built twin Queen Anne mansions on the hill above it for his sons Charles and Edward. One of them burned down in the 1930s. The other one is still standing, and it is the most haunted house in New York City.
The legend begins with Edward. On June 8, 1894, he was found dead behind his father's brick factory — a gunshot to the right temple, officially suicide, though the family suspected murder (the rumor was his wife and a doctor were poisoning him). His brother Charles, across the lawn, reportedly held séances in the surviving mansion trying to reach him — 'he opened up all these portals,' the caretaker says, 'and never knew how to shut them.' Edward's widow Frieda is said to wail in the halls; a murdered cook is said to clang in the kitchen; children were supposedly locked in a closet that still scratches.
Then, in April 2005, the ghost story got a body. The caretaker — a Bonanno crime family associate — lured a man named Robert McKelvey to the deserted grounds, stabbed and strangled him, drowned him in a puddle, dismembered the body, and burned the pieces in the mansion's furnace. The FBI searched the grounds for more. The Kreischer Mansion had spent a century being haunted by legend; the mob gave it a murder that was real.
Why this file matters
Kreischer Mansion is the archive's portal file — a brick baron's folly where the son's séances are said to have left the doors open, where every legend of the house is finally outmatched by the documented 2005 mafia killing on the grounds.
A mansion where the séances were real keeps its furnace — the file's suggestion being that Kreischer's haunting reputation was earned twice: once by the family, once by the mob.

Kreischer House, also known as Kreischer Mansion, is a historic home located in Charleston, Staten Island. Built by German immigrant Balthasar Kreischer about 1885, it is a large, asymmetrically massed 2+1⁄2-story, wood-frame house in the American Queen Anne style. The rectangular house features spacious verandas, gables with jigsaw bargeboards, decorative railings, posts and brackets, tall chimneys, and a corner tower. It was one of two mansions built by Kreischer for his sons. The surviving house belonged to son Edward Kreischer; the other, to his brother Charles. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
