Is Lake Valley haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Lake Valley is the town the Bridal Chamber built — the silver camp that exploded in 1882 when miners opened a cavity of ore so pure it could be shipped straight to the mint. The Bridal Chamber was a cave of silver twenty-six feet wide and two hundred long; a single specimen went to the Denver exposition valued at $7,000, and the legend says you could melt the silver out of the ceiling with a candle. Lake Valley grew to four thousand people almost overnight.

The riches were real and so was the fraud. The Sierra Grande Mining Company — run by financier Whitaker Wright, with Walt Whitman among its shareholders — sold the boom to eastern investors while the ore was already playing out. The silver crash of 1893 finished the town; Main Street burned in 1895; and Wright ended it in 1902 by swallowing cyanide in a London courtroom rather than go to prison for stock fraud. The BLM now keeps the schoolhouse, the chapel, and the ruins as a walking-tour ghost town.

The file keeps Lake Valley: the Bridal Chamber, the boom and the fraud, the 1893 crash, and the adobe ruins of the town the silver made and unmade.

Lake Valley is the archive's bonanza file — the Bridal Chamber, the cyanide in the courtroom, and the ghost town the BLM stabilized.

Why this file matters

Lake Valley is the archive's bonanza file — the Bridal Chamber strike, Wright's fraud and suicide, and the town that survived as ruins.

A mine of legend keeps its townsite — the file's suggestion being that Lake Valley's hold is the bonanza's double edge: the purest silver in America, the swindle that sold it, and the adobe bones the desert preserved.
