Is Macksville haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Macksville began the way hundreds of Texas towns did: with steel. Around 1910 the Cotton Belt Railroad laid its line through southern Comanche County, and the community that formed around the flag station took the name of J. M. 'Mack' McCurry, an early settler who owned a large tract nearby and farmed berries and peanuts. The Livingstons, Stutevilles, Smiths, Allens, and Browns were among the other founding families the Handbook of Texas preserves.

A flag station was a minimal promise — trains stopped when flagged, and the settlement's fortunes rode on what the surrounding farms could ship. Macksville's peak recorded population came in 1930: seventy-five people.

A documented vanishing

There was no single catastrophe, and that is the point of the file. The depopulation that hollowed out the small farm communities of Central Texas through the mid-twentieth century took Macksville the same way, and by the 1980s the Handbook of Texas described it flatly as a ghost town.

The archive keeps it as a record of the ordinary pattern — a name on a railroad timetable that outlasted the community it served. The research notes flag the usual caution for the curious: the historical identity is confirmed, but surviving structures, parcel ownership, and lawful access are matters to verify on the ground, not assumptions a marker or a map makes for you.

Documented history

  • Established about 1910 around a railroad flag station; recorded as a ghost town by the 1980s. A ghost town's file is unusual: the emptiness itself is documented, and this entry is part of that record. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. Sources including 'Macksville, TX' carry the record. The date is part of the site's documented spine.
