Is Mission San Xavier del Bac haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

San Xavier is the White Dove of the Desert — the 1797 church on the Tohono O'odham reservation, Arizona's oldest intact European building, and the finest Spanish colonial church in the United States. Kino named the place in 1692; the church that stands now was built by the Franciscans a century later on the site he picked.

The mission is the O'odham's — Wa:k, the village by the water, where Kino brought cattle and wheat and the church was built to convert the people who still live there. The mission serves the Wa:k community still — the Tohono O'odham parish that's been on the same ground since before there was a United States.

The church is the masterpiece — the white stucco visible for miles against the desert, the interior that's the most ornate Spanish colonial work in the country, the towers and the dome and the unfinished east tower that legend says was left for tax reasons. The file keeps the dove's survival: the 1692 visit, the 1797 completion, and the church that's still the desert's landmark.

San Xavier del Bac is the archive's dove file — the 1797 church on the O'odham land, Kino's mission site, and the white building that's been the Santa Cruz Valley's landmark since before Arizona was a territory.

Why this file matters

San Xavier is the archive's masterpiece file — the finest Spanish colonial church in the country, the Tohono O'odham parish that never stopped, and the white dove that's visible for miles.

A church that's still a parish keeps its village — the file's suggestion being that San Xavier's hold is Wa:k: the O'odham community the church was built for, the services that never stopped, and the dove that's still white against the desert.

Mission San Xavier del Bac (Spanish: La Misión de San Xavier del Bac) is a historic Spanish Catholic mission about 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Tucson, Arizona, on the Tohono O'odham Nation San Xavier Indian Reservation. The mission was founded in 1692 by Eusebio Kino in the center of a centuries-old settlement of the Sobaipuri O'odham, a branch of the Akimel or River O'odham located along the banks of the Santa Cruz River. The mission was named for Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Jesuit Order in Europe. The original church was built to the north of the later Franciscan church and was demolished during an Apache raid in 1770. The mission was rebuilt between 1783 and 1797, which makes

Reported figures in the church and a presence in the chapel. A church with this much history holds its dead differently — the reports are reverent where most are restless. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. It is the sighting the place is known for, and it hasn't stopped.

Local folklore

Reported figures in the church and a presence in the chapel. A church with this much history holds its dead differently — the reports are reverent where most are restless. It circulates as local folklore — the kind communities keep rather than verify. The account appears in 'San Xavier del Bac'. The tale is the site's other archive — oral, embroidered, and outlasting the documents.

Documented history

  • Completed 1797; an active parish of the Tohono O'odham nation. A church with centuries of documented ministry gives the file real ground to stand on. The fact is historically verified — the part of the file that doesn't need hedging. 'San Xavier del Bac' documents the entry. It's the sort of fact that gives the haunting reports their context.
