Missions

Mission ground — church, courtyard and burial ground folded into a single site — carries some of the oldest layered records in the archive. The documented half runs through colonial administrative papers and parish registers; the reported half attaches to the same walls and the same graves. These dossiers are filed with particular care: the claims are logged as claims, and the record notes what the missions were before it notes what they are said to be.
