The record — long form
W.L. Moody Jr. bought the mansion at 2618 Broadway in the fall of 1900 — weeks after the Great Galveston Storm had killed some eight thousand people and leveled a third of the city. The house had survived; its original owner, the widow Narcissa Willis, had died the year before. Moody moved his family in for Christmas, three months after the worst natural disaster in American history, which was characteristic: he built his empire on the wreckage of other people's caution.
The Moodys were Texas royalty — cotton, banking, insurance, railroads, hotels, newspapers — and the mansion was the seat of it: twenty-eight thousand square feet designed by a British architect, interiors by Pottier & Stymus of New York, built thick-walled and deep-porched to survive Gulf storms, which it did, repeatedly, for a century. W.L. lived there until 1954; his daughter Mary Moody Northen — one of the first women to run a major American financial empire — lived there until Hurricane Alicia forced her out in 1983.
The house opened as a museum in 1991 with the family's belongings still in it — not a reconstruction, an occupation. The audio tour has the Moodys' own voices on it, recorded by the family, walking you through the rooms they grew up in. Most house museums interpret a vanished world; the Moody Mansion just opens the door to one that's still furnished.
