The record — long form
North Unity began in 1855 on the Lake Michigan shore where Shalda Creek meets the water, founded by Bohemian and German immigrants organized in Chicago under a society they called the Verein. Francis Kraitz, his wife Antonia, and their family had arrived from Pelhrimov, Bohemia, that August; Chicago offered the newcomers winter, few jobs, and a typhoid epidemic, so the Verein hired a sailboat and went looking for 'paradise' 270 miles up the coast, landing finally in the deep forest near Pyramid Bay.
Documented history
The first winter nearly ended them. Families wintered in a 150-by-20-foot communal barracks and improvised shelters, buying a little corn from Anishinaabe neighbors and potatoes hauled across the ice from the Manitou Islands. Spring brought farms, then a sawmill, a schoolhouse, a post office in 1859, a two-story mercantile with a dance hall upstairs, and John Shalda's gristmill at the creek mouth.
Fire destroyed the village in 1871, in the same catastrophic season that burned Chicago and much of Michigan's lumber country. The families rebuilt inland at the crossroads now called Shalda Corners, where a mid-1860s log cabin and the log school still stand. The original lakefront site, inside today's Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, keeps no visible remains — the National Park Service describes it as a place to stand and reconstruct rather than a place to see.
Documented history
Founded in 1855; after the 1871 fire families relocated inland. North Unity's history is documented — boom, bust, and desertion all on record, the lore layered on top. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. The record appears in 'Ghost Towns of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore'. The entry's timeline holds it; the lore holds the rest.
