The record — long form

Galena is a Route 66 mining town in the southeastern corner of Kansas, and its Oak Hill Cemetery — also recorded as Empire City Cemetery — holds the usual lead-and-zinc-era dead. The claim that put it in the archive is a legend, and the file's research notes say plainly that no witchcraft accusation or accused person has ever been verified: toward the back of the cemetery there is said to be a witch's grave, from which apparitions, voices, and strange sounds reportedly emanate, most insistently around 3:33 a.m.

A fuller variant surfaced in 2007 coverage: a husband who denied his wife a Christian burial watched her gravestone crack into the shape of a woman's face; each replacement stone cracked the same way until he gave up and moved away.

The hunt that found nothing

What distinguishes this file is that the investigation is documented. In 2007 two Missouri Southern State University ghost hunters appeared before the Galena City Council, obtained permission to work both city cemeteries after hours, and told the press what they had heard — including the witch's-grave story. Their findings: nothing. The police chief, who lived beside Oak Hill, told the Joplin Globe he had seen nothing there he would call a ghost either.

The archive keeps both halves: a Route 66 graveyard legend still retold by teenagers and tourism pages, and a rare on-record null result. The grave is a legend marker, not a documented person — the file says so.

The record of claims

Local folkloreApparition

Folklore connects voices and apparitions with a purported witch’s grave. Cemeteries keep their stories in the stones; Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena, Kansas has its version filed among them. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. 'Haunted Kansas Road Trip: 13 Spooky Locations to Make…' carries the account. Whatever walks there, it walks often enough to keep the reports coming.

Local folklore

Folklore connects voices and apparitions with a purported witch’s grave. Oak Hill Cemetery's dead are the site's permanent residents; the reports are how the living say they keep noticing. It circulates as local folklore — the kind communities keep rather than verify. The tale is the site's other archive — oral, embroidered, and outlasting the documents.
