The record — long form

The Old Stage Coach Inn near Moscow, Lamar County — known to the record as the Moore-Hill House — was built around 1834 for James Moore, an early Alabama politician, on Andrew Jackson's Military Road, the route cut after the War of 1812 to connect Nashville with New Orleans. For years it took the traffic that road carried: stagecoach passengers stopping overnight in a still-young state.

What fixed the house in the county's darker memory was a killing in 1881. Family legend holds that a Mrs. Armstrong was murdered by a Black man wielding a grappling hook on a chain, that the cook fled out the back to alert field hands, and that the alleged killer was hunted down and lynched in the front yard.

What the newspapers said

The written record disagrees with the family version, and the file keeps both. Two December 1881 reports — in the Pickens County Herald and West Alabamian and the Marion Times-Standard — describe something bloodier: a man the papers called a 'crazy negro' tried to seize an Armstrong child; Mrs. Winchester Armstrong and her mother wrestled the child free and both were killed, the mother struck in the head with an ax. Winchester Armstrong then arrived and shot the assailant dead. Different weapons, two victims, a shooting in place of a lynching — the conflict is preserved in the dossier's notes rather than smoothed over.

The haunting reports belong to the older telling. Tradition speaks of a glowing orb in the front yard and of Mrs. Armstrong's spirit clanking down the stairs trailing the hook and chain said to have killed her — details the newspaper record shows were themselves part of the legend. The file keeps the distinction plainly: one documented atrocity, one embroidered ghost story laid over it.
