The record — long form
The Old Shelby County Courthouse is the Jeffersonian survivor — the 1854 brick cross in the middle of Columbiana's traffic circle, built for twenty-five hundred dollars when the log courthouse gave out, and bricked over entirely in 1881 when the county grew into it. It served until the new courthouse in 1908, then spent fifty years as hotel, boarding house, and apartments before the city bought it for five thousand and made it City Hall.
The historical society saved it from demolition in the seventies and made it the museum and archive — eight hundred county record books going back to the 1800s, the finest local archive in Alabama. The courthouse that nearly came down for space is the one that holds the county's whole memory, the oldest standing courthouse in the state still doing its job of keeping records.
