Is Old Coffee County Jail haunted?
The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed investigation claim. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.
The record — long form
The Old Coffee County Jail at 329 Putnam Street dates to about 1912 — the state historic listing says 1909 — replacing a county lockup a prison inspector had condemned as a 'veritable firetrap' and demanding one with segregated cells for its era's categories of prisoners and a room for the sick. Elba had been the county seat since the 1850s, and the new jail served it through most of the twentieth century, including the town's catastrophic 1990 flood, which put the whole city under water for four days.
Its heaviest documented entry is a murder: on March 1, 1979, Coffee County Sheriff C.F. 'Neil' Grantham was shot and killed in front of the jail.
Writings and claims
Retired from corrections use, the jail survives as a tourism stop — visitors walk its halls and read the 'mysterious writings' prisoners left on the walls — and each October it plays the 'Old Haunted Jail' in Elba's Pumpkins on the Square festival. The paranormal layer is a single investigation claim: the Southern Spirit Guide recounts investigators' reported voices and scratches inside.
That is the file's honest shape — a documented county jail with a documented tragedy at its door, seasonal haunted-house duty, and an investigators' log filed under claims rather than findings.
The record of claims
Southern Spirit Guide reports investigators’ claimed voices and scratches. Institutions that held suffering rarely shed their reputations, and Old Coffee County Jail in Elba, Alabama held its share. It's an investigation claim — the kind that convinces the people who were in the room. The report is preserved in sources like 'Alabama Hauntings — County by County, Part II'. It's the kind of claim that outlives debunkings — too many witnesses, too few explanations.
