The record — long form

The Old York Gaol is America's oldest surviving jail — the stone cell built about 1720 on Gaol Hill, where the Province of Maine had kept its prison since the first plank structure went up in 1656. The stone 'dungeon' was lined in oak; over the next eighty-six years the complex grew around it — the House of Correction, the gaoler's residence, the gambrel roof of 1763 that joined them all into one building.

The gaol served the whole province until 1760 and the town for another century — debtors and thieves and the pirates of the coast, locked behind the original bolts that still work. It became a schoolhouse in the 1890s and a museum in 1900, when William Dean Howells pushed for its preservation. The hinges and locks are original; the cellar has filled in; the stone cell is the same room it was three hundred years ago.

The file keeps the Old Gaol: the 1720 dungeon, the colonial prison complex, the museum since 1900, and the oldest jail building in America still standing on its hill.

The Old York Gaol is the archive's dungeon file — the provincial prison, the original bolts, and the cell that predates the state.

Why this file matters

The Old York Gaol is the archive's dungeon file — the 1720 stone cell, the 1656 prison hill, and the museum since 1900.

A jail older than the state keeps its locks — the file's suggestion being that the Gaol's hold is the intactness: the bolts that still turn, the oak-lined stone, and the building that held Maine's prisoners for a century and a half.

The record of claims

Reported experienceVoices

Tourism reports visitors describing unexplained voices. The institution's reports concentrate where the confinement was worst — the building's own floor plan supplies the map. The claim rests on experience rather than evidence, and the file says so. The account appears in 'Halloween Haunts & Creepy Things to Do in Maine'. It's the sort of report that survives precisely because it asks you to listen, not look.

Documented history

This belongs to the verified spine of the entry, the layer everything else is measured against. The detail is preserved in 'Halloween Haunts & Creepy Things to Do in Maine'.
