Is Oregon Caves haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Oregon Caves is the cave a bear found — the 1874 discovery when Elijah Davidson followed his dog Bruno into the Siskiyou hillside after a bear, ran out of matches in the dark, and followed the stream out. The bear-wrestler who found the marble halls gave the monument its origin story.

The cave is marble — the crystallized limestone that makes it different from every other western cave, the 'Marble Halls of Oregon' that Joaquin Miller publicized in Sunset magazine. Taft made it a monument in 1909; the cave drew 360 visitors a year before the road came in 1922.

The monument is still the Siskiyou cave — the tours through the marble passages, the Chateau at the cave's entrance, and the system that's still being explored. The file keeps the discovery: the dog and the bear and the dark, the marble that made it a monument, and the cave that's been Oregon's underground since 1874.

Oregon Caves is the archive's marble file — the 1874 bear-dog discovery, the marble halls that made it a monument, and the cave that started with a hunter out of matches.

Why this file matters

Oregon Caves is the archive's discovery file — the cave found chasing a dog, the marble that made it unique, and the monument that predates the road that brought the visitors.

A cave found by a bear keeps its marble — the file's suggestion being that Oregon Caves' hold is the material: the crystallized limestone, the halls Miller named, and the discovery that happened in the dark.
