Is Battery Point Lighthouse haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Battery Point is the lighthouse you can only reach when the ocean lets you. The 1856 light station sits on an island off the end of A Street in Crescent City — at low tide a two-hundred-foot crossing of sand and rock, at high tide an island again. Its oil lamps were first lit December 10, 1856; keeper Theophilus Magruder took charge on Christmas Day. The Cape Cod-style granite house with the cylindrical tower rising from its roof is the standard design of the early West Coast stations — the house and the light in one building, the keeper's family living under the lens.

The light outlasted its era — the Lighthouse Service ran it until the Coast Guard took over in 1936, automation came in 1953, decommissioning in 1965 — then the historical society brought it back: since 1982 it shines again as a private aid to navigation, tended by live-in keepers who also run the museum. The rooms keep the keepers' own furniture, much of it crafted by the men who tended the light; the Fifth Order Drumm lens still operates.

Crescent City has been destroyed by tsunami more than once — the 1964 wave killed eleven downtown — and the lighthouse on its island survived all of it, the beam that outlasted the harbor's worst night. Visitors still time their crossing by the tide tables, and the sneaker waves that sweep the rocks are the museum's real warning.

Battery Point is the archive's tide file — the 1856 island lighthouse reachable only at low tide, deactivated and relit by volunteers, keeping its keepers' furniture and a working Fresnel lens on the rock the sea still guards.

Why this file matters

Battery Point Lighthouse is the archive's tidal file — the 1856 Crescent City station on an island you can only walk to at low tide, deactivated in 1965 and relit by the historical society in 1982, with keepers still in residence and the original furniture in place.

A lighthouse gated by the tide keeps its lens — the file's suggestion being that Battery Point's hold is the crossing: the two hundred feet of wet rock that decides whether you reach it, on the island where the keepers still live.

The record of claims

Local folkloreApparition

Volunteer keepers and visitors report footsteps and a figure in the tower. Crews leave marks on vessels long after they muster out, and Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City, California had crews enough. It survives as local folklore, which is to say it survives because people keep telling it. It is the sighting the place is known for, and it hasn't stopped.

Local folklore

Volunteer keepers and visitors report footsteps and a figure in the tower. A vessel with Battery Point Lighthouse's service record gives the reports an unusually crowded roster to draw on. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. The report is preserved in sources like 'Battery Point Light'. The retelling is the record now — the legend metabolized the facts long ago.

Documented history

  • Lit 1856; still an active aid to navigation with a museum. Battery Point Lighthouse's history is documented — launches, crews, and losses all on record before the lore begins. The record holds it as fact — documented, not retold. The detail is preserved in 'Battery Point Light'. It is the kind of fact the rest of the dossier leans on.
