Is Peale haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Peale, in Clearfield County just north of Interstate 80 near Grassflat, was a coal town built on a politician's optimism. State Senator Samuel R. Peale of Lock Haven founded it around 1883, and at its height it held on the order of 2,500 people — a real town with the standard complement of company houses and shops.

The founding decision, the PA Wilds account records, was not a good one: the coal seam beside Peale was thin. Miners faced a daily hike of miles to find work in the neighboring town of Grassflat, and the arithmetic resolved itself the obvious way — the families moved to the work. Peale was effectively empty by about 1912, having lasted less than thirty years.

Foundations at the end of the road

What survives is exactly what the founders' miscalculation left: building foundations at the end of Peale Road off Route 53, in forest that has had a century to reclaim the plat. The site is visitable but unimproved, and the file notes the coordinates and current conditions await verification.

Peale earns its entry as the clean-cut case of a named town with a single fatal flaw — founded by a senator, populated by miners, abandoned for a commute. No paranormal claim attaches; the record is boom, bust, and foundations.

Documented history

  • Coal settlement existed approximately 1883–1912; depleted workings led residents toward Grassflat. Peale's history is documented — boom, bust, and desertion all on record, the lore layered on top. This belongs to the verified spine of the entry, the layer everything else is measured against. The detail is preserved in 'Explore the historic ruins of the Pennsylvania Wilds'. The record keeps it — history, not lore.
