The record — long form

The Rising Sun is the farmhouse that became the tavern — Edward Baldwin's 1753 frame house on Generals Highway, where his son Henry came back from the Revolution, married the tavern-keeper's widow, added the gambrel wing, and got the license in 1785. For thirty years it was the crossroads inn: the stagecoach stop, the post office, the meeting place, the taproom with the arched cupboards that are still in the wall.

The Baldwin women kept it after Henry — Maria and then her second husband ran it to 1816 — and the Daughters of the American Revolution took it in 1916. The smell of roses that visitors report is the inn's own haunting — the unexplained perfume in the rooms where two and a half centuries of travelers slept.

The file keeps the Rising Sun: the 1753 farmhouse, the 1785 tavern license, the cupboard walls, and the roses that nobody can account for.

The Rising Sun Inn is the archive's Crownsville file — the stagecoach tavern and the phantom perfume.

Why this file matters

The Rising Sun Inn is the archive's Crownsville file — the Baldwin tavern, the Rochambeau route, and the smell of roses.

A farmhouse tavern keeps its scent — the file's suggestion being that the Rising Sun's hold is the lingering: the tobacco family, the widows who kept it open, and the perfume that stayed after they were gone.
