Crownsville Hospital Center
Founded in 1911 as the Hospital for the Negro Insane, Crownsville was the state’s asylum for Black patients—built partly by patients themselves and later infamous for overcrowding and an Erie Stanley Gardener-era abuse exposé. Closed in 2004, its wards decayed into a trespass-and-legend site the state is now redeveloping.

Is Crownsville Hospital Center haunted?
The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed internet rumor. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.
The record — long form
Crownsville was the segregated asylum — the 1911 'Hospital for the Negro Insane' that Maryland built to move Black patients out of the almshouses and jails, the institution that was separate and unequal until 1963. The murals the patients painted as art therapy are still on the walls of the empty buildings.
The hospital was the system's edge — the first state mental hospital for Black patients, the TB colony, the 'night doctors' legend that grew from the institution's reality. The conditions were poor even by asylum standards; the staff of Black nurses and attendants made the care better than the state intended.
The campus is still there — the shuttered buildings since 2004, the murals, the memorial park planned for the site. The file keeps the hospital: the segregated asylum, the patients' art, and the institution that's being remembered rather than erased.
Crownsville is the archive's segregated-asylum file — the Hospital for the Negro Insane, the murals, and the site that's becoming a memorial.
Why this file matters
Crownsville is the archive's segregated-asylum file — the Black-only institution, the patients' murals, and the memorial that's being planned.
An asylum that was segregated keeps its art — the file's suggestion being that Crownsville's hold is the murals: the patients' paintings on the walls, the 'night doctors' legend, and the institution that's being made into memory.

The Crownsville Hospital Center was a psychiatric hospital located in Crownsville, Maryland. It was in operation from 1911 until 2004.

The record of claims
Trespassers and staff report voices and figures in the abandoned wards. The reports at Crownsville Hospital Center are the site's second history — unofficial, unverified, and stubbornly retold. Internet-era retellings built most of the file; the underlying report is thin. The account appears in 'Crownsville Hospital Center'. Small phenomena, steadily reported: the file's most honest kind of haunting.
