The record — long form
Darnall's Chance was built in 1742 — the Upper Marlboro house of James Wardrop, later the Darnall family's seat, a colonial-era home on the tobacco road between the Patuxent ports. The file's documented spine is the house's age: a pre-Revolutionary dwelling kept as a museum, its rooms holding the colonial county's life.
The Network to Freedom listing is the file's second register — the house's documented connection to the freedom struggle, the colonial ground holding the escaping people's history beside the owners'.
The house's whole record
The file's legend layer is empty — Darnall's Chance's claim is the documented house: a 1742 building whose full history, including the freedom road's passage through its ground, is the record the museum keeps.
The colonial fabric is the file's register — a house that survived the Revolution era keeping the era's whole population's history, the enslaved and the escaping in the file beside the owners.
Why this file matters
Darnall's Chance is the archive's colonial-county file — a 1742 house whose Network to Freedom documentation covers the whole population. The preserved house is the record; the full register is the point.
A colonial house that documents its enslaved people's history keeps the whole truth — the file's suggestion being that Darnall's Chance holds more than its owners' story.

The house itself was built c. 1742 by a merchant named James Wardrop who bought some of Darnall's land from Eleanor Darnall Carroll and her husband Daniel Carroll, a politician and wealthy planter. Wardrop enslaved 32 people at the house. Today, Darnall's Chance houses the
