Is Steppingstone Farm Museum haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed unverified. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Steppingstone Farm Museum is the tool collection that became a farm — a 23-acre Susquehanna valley homestead that preserves the crafts and trades of rural Maryland from 1880 to 1920. It began with J. Edmund Bull, a New York banker who retired to Harford County in 1957, inherited his father and grandfather's woodworking tools, and spent the next two decades at auctions and estate sales until he had six thousand implements of the pre-industrial trades.

The farm sits on the 'Land of Promise' tract — surveyed in 1684, farmed by Colonel Thomas Taylor, and later the Gilman Paul property — inside Susquehanna State Park. Bull opened his displays in 1970 and the museum grew around them: a farmhouse furnished as a turn-of-the-century home, artisan shops for the blacksmith, cooper, wheelwright, and weaver, and a barn full of the machines the hand tools preceded. The barn that stood since the 1880s burned in June 2024, and the museum is rebuilding around the loss.

The file keeps Steppingstone: Bull's six thousand tools, the Land of Promise, the working shops, and the fire that took the barn but not the museum.

Steppingstone is the archive's craft file — the banker's tool collection, the colonial tract, and the farm that demonstrates what the machine replaced.

Why this file matters

Steppingstone is the archive's craft file — Bull's 6,000 tools, the Land of Promise tract, and the 1880s barn lost to the 2024 fire.

A collection of obsolete tools keeps its farm — the file's suggestion being that Steppingstone's hold is the preservation: the trades the machines ended, the banker who saved them, and the fire that showed what the collection was for.

The Steppingstone Museum is a non-profit educational and cultural institution on the Susquehanna River, northwest of Havre de Grace, Maryland, whose mission is to preserve and interpret the rural heritage of Harford County, Maryland. The museum displays and preserves the private collection of 7,000 tools and artifacts amassed by J. Edmund Bull along with later accessions. The Bull collection was first displayed at his home, which he called Steppingstone. In 1979, the museum relocated to the former Gilman Paul property, an 18th-century farm now in Susquehanna State Park, and the museum was expanded to include demonstrations of various trades commonplace in rural America of the 19th century.
