The record — long form
Taunton State Hospital was Massachusetts' second answer to Dorothea Dix. Her 1843 Memorial to the legislature — documenting the insane kept in squalor in local jails — forced the 1848 study that showed Worcester overflowing; the Taunton Lunatic Asylum opened in 1854 as the state's first hospital built on Kirkbride's congregate plan. Elbridge Boyden's Renaissance Revival pile — domed administration core, stepped-back wings for 250 patients, fireproof cast iron, a cupola rising seventy feet for the 'panoramic view of great beauty' — was moral treatment rendered in architecture.
The Kirkbride ran its full arc — overcrowding, infirmary wings connected by those distinctive enclosed raised walkways, a working farm, the chapel and verandas the plan prescribed — until the main building was largely abandoned in 1975 while the hospital continued on other parts of the campus. The dome collapsed in 1999. On the night of March 19, 2006, fire gutted the administration and theater; the wings followed into demolition by 2009, the cast-iron capitals salvaged and sold across the country.
The haunting is a demolished building's — staff reported a man in white walking the third-floor halls of the old Goss Building and a front corner room that left nearly everyone uneasy; the legend survives its architecture. What still operates is the modern hospital behind where the Kirkbride stood — Taunton treats forensic patients still, the second-oldest state asylum in the country carrying on without its founding pile.
Taunton State Hospital is the archive's burned-Kirkbride file — Boyden's 1854 dome-and-wings asylum, abandoned in 1975, dome collapsed in 1999, gutted by fire in 2006, demolished by 2009 — while the hospital it founded still runs.
Why this file matters
Taunton State Hospital is the archive's lost-Kirkbride file — the Massachusetts asylum Dix's Memorial helped force into being, whose domed centerpiece outlived its abandonment by decades before fire and demolition took it, leaving only the ghost reports.
A building that burned keeps its third floor — the file's suggestion being that Taunton's hold is the demolished Goss Building: the man in white on the third floor and the uneasy corner room, reported in a structure that no longer stands.

Taunton State Hospital is a psychiatric hospital located on Hodges Avenue in Taunton, Massachusetts. Established in 1854, it was originally known as the State Lunatic Hospital at Taunton. It was the second state asylum in Massachusetts. Most of the original part of the facility was built in a unique and rare neo-classical style designed by architects Boyden & Ball. It is also a Kirkbride Plan hospital and is located on a large 154-acre (62 ha) farm along the Mill River. The complex was expanded at various times to include over forty buildings and structures. The main part of the hospital (known as "the Kirkbride Building") closed in 1975, and the buildings fell into disrepair. In 1994, the
