The record — long form

The inn on Main Street in Tilton has hosted Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Mary Baker Eddy — and, by the owners' count, a more permanent population of somewhere around thirty. The building now operating as the Tilton Inn dates to 1875, and by the inn's own account it has burned down three times across its history, at intervals of roughly a century. Upstairs rooms are named for notable guests and residents; the lower level once held the town jail.

One of those fires is said to have claimed Laura — a twelve-year-old girl whose family lived at the inn in the 1800s. The legend has her parents running the business and leaving their bright, responsible daughter to mind the desk; while they were out, fire broke out, and Laura was trapped in what is now called the Sanborn room. She never left, in both senses of the phrase.

Laura

The reports match the biography: a child's running footsteps, a young girl seen in the upstairs rooms and down in the pub, playful pranks, objects moved, doors closing on their own, hair stroked by unseen hands. Former staff describe heavy stomping on the third floor with no one there, lights and televisions activating while unplugged, cold spots dense enough to feel through a wall. The Tilton and Sanborn rooms are listed as her known haunts — the inn's most requested.

The inn has been investigated more than once. The Atlantic Paranormal Society — the TAPS team that became television's Ghost Hunters — spent a night in 2010, in a session viewers saw in the episode "Uninvited Guests," and concluded the activity was genuine. Psychics passing through have given the file its curiously sunny codicil: Laura, contacted in what is said to be her room, insists she is happy there.

The file's reading

The fires and the famous guests are history; Laura is the inn's own telling, carried by owners, guests, and investigators rather than records — eight deaths in the building across its history, by local count, with her name on the one everyone asks about. The archive keeps the file as the town keeps the room: occupied.
